Introduction：

Deslorelin is a synthetic hormone used in veterinary medicine. Deslorelin products are currently approved for use to promote ovulation in mares as part of the artificial insemination process. It is also used to stabilize high-risk pregnancies, mainly of livestock. Unlike other GnRH agonists, which are mainly used to inhibit luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone by their ultimate downregulation of the pituitary gland, Deslorelin is primarily used for the initial flare effect upon the pituitary, and its associated surge of LH secretion. Deslorelin is also used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia in dogs. It is also used to treat pet parrots suffering from chronic egg laying behavior.

Deslorelin is a synthetic analogue of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is more potent than the native hormone and is more resistant to proteolysis. Like GnRH, it binds with high affinity to the GnRH receptor on anterior pituitary cells, where it acts as an agonist.    Acutely, it stimulates the secretion of LH and FSH from the anterior pituitary but prolonged, continuous exposure leads to inhibition of secretion by desensitization of the pituitary gonadotropes. As with other GnRH agonists, it has potential therapeutic applications in the treatment of endometriosis, uterine leiomyoma (fibroids), malignant neoplasms, and in assisted reproduction protocols.
