Introduction:

Met-enkephalin is a 5-amino acid endogenous peptide that acts as an agonist at opioid receptors. It is one of the first discovered endogenous opioid peptides, or opiopeptins, along with its congener. It has a high affinity for delta opioid peptide receptors and mu opioid peptide receptors compared to kappa opioid peptide receptors. It is very rapidly metabolized by endogenous proteases and, as such, has no apparent clinical use. The enkephalins appear to play an important role in many physiological functions, including pain perception, response to stress, and GI function. Met-enkephalin is derived from much larger precursor peptides, including proenkephalin, prodynorphin, and proopiomelanocortin (POMC)
